This is one of the best books I've ever read. The book surpasses the movie. Alice Walker is an amazing story teller.

I was expecting a real depressing and difficult trudge that, while beautiful and enlightening, would wallow in a particularly horrible time and place. And while it was, of course, beautiful and enlightening, I was very pleasantly surprised at the overall, let's say, upward trajectory for Celie and finished the book feeling a lot better than I expected. Not that it's an author's role to make me feel happy or content when reading their work, but my expectations were subverted.

I really loved this book. It is the story of two sisters. One is a missionary in Africa and the other remains in the South of their childhood. The book unfolds in letters. Through all the time apart, the two sisters still keep each other close to them through letters. Definitely a good read. I'd love to see the musical!
