Really well written, exquisitely drawn, but *so* *much* violence, especially sexual. Racist caricatures that are sometimes problematized and sometimes... not. Rushed through because I wanted to be done with it. Idk.

Wow! Craig Thompson has created an incredible book, with delicate artwork and calligraphy. The stories within stories, passages from the Koran, and deeply emotional relationship between the main characters are interwoven seamlessly. This is a book that I have purchased and will treasure. I wanted to read it again as soon as I finished it.

I absolutely adored this book!! Craig Thompson truly melds art and storytelling to wonderful affect. The Arabic script is breathtaking and the full panels are mezmorizing. He makes you feel the pain and joy of his characters. The undertones of social responsibility make me want to stand up and fight.

1 star for the story, which alternates between boring, simplistic and landing on the wrong side of the line between homage and copying. If I were the kind of person who got offended for political reasons, I'd probably find the story offensive as well.
So an average of 3 stars. ...more
