Yikes, this book is intense. Every single moment was so somber and just difficult. As I was reading, my only reaction was "Are you kidding me?!" I can't imagine how traumatic just one of the episodes in the book would be, let alone living through all of them! It's remarkable that David was able to channel all of that pain into such amazing artwork. I can't say I enjoyed reading his story, but I do admire his talent.

Bleak and haunting, David Small's graphic novel memoir will stay with the reader for a long time.
His grim childhood, which includes losing a vocal chord during surgery to remove cancer, is shown through black and white drawings and sparse panels.
Painful but ultimately triumphant, this book scores on many levels. Would definitely recommend to a teen reader. ...more

David Small is one of my favorite illustrators. This is not a happy memoir, but it's very good.

4 stars for the artwork, 2 stars for the story - not there was anything wrong with it; there just wasn't a lot to it.
