What Members Thought

[2005 review.] I'm still reeling from this and not sure how to feel -- or even quite what happened. The narrator was definitely loathsome though. I don't know if I can name a more horrible fictional character. But the book itself was extremely original and well done and clever. Plus the actual process of reading it was truly unique.

Unique, hypertextual, metafictional, yet also lol-funny and surprisingly poignant. The language and wordplay is dazzling, the allusions are rich, and yet there are also jokes about bodily functions. Many different tones and styles and devices wrapped up into one crazy structure, and it works. Genius. Viva Zembla.
