The protagonist of this story is sort of a bumbling fool, making a lot of frustrating mistakes, but nonetheless I found I liked him. Grady Tripp is a professor and a writer who has been struggling to finish his latest novel for several years - at the point that we meet him, it's nowhere near being finished but already far too long. I don't like "books like this"---where the characters are all in failing marriages and everyone is a failure and miserable all the time and an invisible high school English teacher is breathing down your neck and chiding you for not understanding the book at all, you philistine.
But I really enjoyed reading this book, I finished it in a matter of days, and I guess the only thing left to attribute it to is Michael Chabon and his style.
