While Pynchon's books are always hard to follow and never particularly narratively satisfying, they always contain bits that are just so much fun to experience. While I enjoyed the adventures of Benny Profane in and around New York City in 1956 (which contained one of my favorite sentences: "Profane, fat, sweated."), the pile of characters and interweaving of stories in the outside world, which spends time in Malta, Florence, Namibia, Egypt, 1899, 1919, and 1945, were a bit more of a muddle for ...more
