Sometimes it's interesting to read a story with an unsympathetic protagonist, and while I did actually finish the book (which by itself is a compliment) I was so frustrated with how selfish and navel-gazing the main character was that at the end my main emotion was vague irritation. I do like Sue Monk Kidd's use of language and some of the themes she develops through myths/religion (or the reinterpretation of those) -- I just wish this book had a little more substance.
