I chose this book because I wanted something quick to read - that was the biggest mistake of my life. This book took me twice as long to get into it. And it wasn't because it was a bad read. Far from the truth. The problem was, this book made me think. Every time I would start reading it, I would get into the storyline and wonder how Maurice could hold so much hatred towards Sarah and Henry. I listened to the Colin Firth narration of the audiobook, and it was beautiful and profound, and even though I'm not religious I was moved by the questions of faith and love/hatred of God.
However, it was so unbearably depressing that I dreaded the experience of listening to it. The narration was almost too good, since it brought the listener into the painful world of the characters, and really, who in their right mind would want to spend any time there?
