Nancy Pearl recommended this book on a list for "omnivorous readers," which I guess I probably am. This book is hard to fit into a genre so the omnivorous description seems apt. It alternates telling the stories of two people: 1) a morbidly obese, agoraphobic former professor who lives in Brooklyn, and 2) a 17-year old boy from Yonkers whose mother was once a student of the professor. This book is the story of two men - Arthur Opp and Kel Keller. Arthur is a former college teacher who has become extremely obese and rarely leaves his house. Kel is the teenage son of Charlene, a woman Arthur dated years and years before, and who is Kel's mother. Through some very sad circumstances, Charlene brings the two of them together.
