A very interesting account of a murder in New York in the late 1800s, woven together with the rise of yellow journalism and sensationalist reporting. We see glimpses of inept police investigations, newspaper publishers trying to out do one another, and suspects saying anything and everything in hopes of going free. If you enjoy crime writing, you'll definitely want to pick this up. ...more

Shelves: true-crime
While this was well-written and interesting, it was less about the murder and its investigation and far more about the rivalry between Hearst and Pulitzer and their respective papers. While I understand that the newspapers and the rivalry between the publishers played a major role in the criminal investigations of that particular era, that wasn't really what I was looking for in the book. ...more
