So the first time I listened to this book, the only version I could find was abridged. This combined with lack of literary acumen on my part in not realizing it was in fact a parody of gothic literature, caused me to count this as my least favorite of the Jane Austen books.
However, I finally decided to revisit it when I found it as an unabridged audiobook at my library. This time through was totally different from the first. This book is hilarious. I love it!

Well, it's her first novel, and while it's good, Austen doesn't quite have the right feel in place. She's got a few great characters - particularly the Thorpe siblings, but the pace of the plot is off. It almost feels like we're in the wrong place when some of the most important things happen, and that we hear about them after the fact. Obviously, that was a conscious decision by Austen, but still, the stuff we missed constitutes the major action of the novel.

I dunno. Ok, I read this about 40 years ago and thought it was uneven but generally fun. Now... Not as much fun as I remember, but very uneven. The Bath part I found trying, a long yawn. I do enjoy Jane's direct address to the reader.
