I'd be pre-disposed to like this book before reading it just for the simple fact that it's based in Greek myth, and I love Greek myth. That aside, however, the author did a wonderful job bringing something brand new to old myths.

Starcrossed had such a promising premise for me. Greek mythology, Demi Gods, romance, sounds perfect right?
Starcrossed started out well, a little spooky, great world building, a heroine who was independent and strong, tons of questions to be answered throughout the book, and the love interest (who we all know she’s going to end up with) who isn’t immediately fawned over by the heroine, in fact they literally want to kill each other.
Safe to say, the first half of this book is original and gripp Starcrossed had such a promising premise for me. Greek mythology, Demi Gods, romance, sounds perfect right?
Starcrossed started out well, a little spooky, great world building, a heroine who was independent and strong, tons of questions to be answered throughout the book, and the love interest (who we all know she’s going to end up with) who isn’t immediately fawned over by the heroine, in fact they literally want to kill each other.
Safe to say, the first half of this book is original and gripping, both in the writing and the story itself. The characters are fleshed out and each could stand on their own to have their own stories in their own books, they were that strong. Sadly though, after the inevitable happens (it has to do with the heroine and the gorgeous boy she’s been trying to kill for the last week) and the romance picks up, everything seems to unravel a little. The originality dies off and begins to follow every other teen angst romance book I’ve ever read, the characters become cliché, the evil dude turn s up, some slightly annoying back story with Helen’s mother emerges, and to top it all off, AND I CANNOT BELIEVE THE AUTHOR DID THIS, there is a completely unnecessary bombshell at the very end of the book! Which I assume is designed to make us pine for the next book in the series, but after seeing it done in Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series, I just rolled my eyes and mentally shouted REALLY??!!! You really want to do that???

Although to be fair, before the bombshell at the end, it seemed like things were going to wrap up a little too neatly for there to be another substantial book after it. The bad guys were gone, the obstacle that had kept the two lovers apart up until now had been resolved and everything looked like a happily ever after in the making. So it did need something to propel the next stage of the plot. But really, the twist could have been way more original, and honestly, I don’t think it’s that much of an obstacle considering they all pretty much related anyway (albeit distantly but going with the Greek back story Angelini chose to follow, all the gods are related, either through being siblings or children of those siblings) So in my opinion, the twist at the end could have been a little stronger and entirely more original.

So after all that, did I like it? Yes. In fact I love the first half and would have continued loving it, if the originality had been maintained. So the end of the book really let me down with this one. I would still recommend this book to everyone, because the first half of the book was just that good, and I tend to be a little critical to a book I have been excited about for such a long time. Also I didn’t like the twist in the Mortal instruments series (in fact I almost gave on it, cause it was almost too much angst for me, but I kept with it and I’m soooo glad I did), and I didn’t like the twist in this one, but I still LOVED the MI series as a whole. So I will have to wait for the next book in this series and see if this story can gain back some of that originality that had me loving the book to begin with.

The mythological aspect is what attracts me to read the book. I just love Greek Mythology. The attraction between Lucas and Helen is so strong but they cannot be together. That really what struck me as I continue reading. What I also loved in the novel is how Helen transforms from a shy, care-free person to a determined and strong-willed human being. Having Lucas by her side made her strong, made her develop what she has, and made her seek for something she just set aside before.

I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway & I am SO glad I did because its now one of my favourites!
Each and every character is intriguing and the storyline is excellent. I got dragged into the story from the very first chapter and had finished it in less than a day!
I very highly recommend Starcrossed to all YA readers.
I can't wait to dive into the next in this series as soon as I buy it!! ...more
