I'm conflicted in my feelings for this series. Sometimes I love the main character Tris, the fascinating world-building, and the romance...and sometimes I feel angry and confused about Tris's stupid choices and the over-complexity of the story. I also feel dissatisfied that this story could be brilliant but it's missing something. I'm not fully invested in these characters and I'm not sure why.

Let me start out by saying that I love this author, and I love this series. Divergent was one of my favorite books of 2011. I have been eagerly anticipating the release of this book, as have most all YA book fanatics. Insurgent was a great second installment to what is shaping up to be an awesome series. I do have some nit-picky things though that detracted from my enjoyment somewhat and kinda kept me from fully loving it as much as I had expected to...

First, was it just me or was Tris kinda whi Let me start out by saying that I love this author, and I love this series. Divergent was one of my favorite books of 2011. I have been eagerly anticipating the release of this book, as have most all YA book fanatics. Insurgent was a great second installment to what is shaping up to be an awesome series. I do have some nit-picky things though that detracted from my enjoyment somewhat and kinda kept me from fully loving it as much as I had expected to...

First, was it just me or was Tris kinda whiny in this book? While I do understand a certain amount of guilt and angst over one or two of her actions in Divergent, I felt that her reaction was a little over the top. It made her personality be almost completely different in this story than the Tris I'd come to love in the first book. I missed that spunky Tris!

Secondly, I just didn't buy her being so close-mouthed and secretive with Four. She overhears one conversation, one in which he doesn't really say a thing, and suddenly he's untrustworthy? She keeps so many things from him, and I felt that it went against her character to do that. There's wasn't really any justification to it, and it seemed like it was done just so that the author could keep some distance there that would have us readers being scared for the outcome of their relationship.

Lastly, I figured out the big secret pretty early in the book. I'm not sure if the clues were just too overt for me, or if I'm just that darn good (I'm not) but I wasn't really surprised when the big revelation came.

All that being said though, I really did like the book. I loved getting a chance to see and experience some of the other factions and get to know their ways and cultures. That was neat. And getting to have a more in depth look at how the factionless live was also eye-opening. There were a couple of wow factors and unexpected things that came from that which I thought were great.

I also loved the relationships in the book, just as I did in the first. People you thought you could trust turn out to be traitors, and vice-versa. So that put a bit of a punch into the story, emotionally. And then there is Tris and Four's relationship...which I also love. I would have liked to have seen her place a bit more faith in him than she did, as I felt that her distrust and secretiveness was undeserved, but when they're together, they're awesome. I love Four!!

All in all, the ending of this book has me clammoring for book three. This was a great second installment and I am definitely looking forward to seeing what happens next, now that everything is about to change. What a cliffhanger!

I really loved Insurgent and I believe that it was better than Divergent! I know it may be hard to believe, but the independence and self-realization that Tris discovers in this novel outweighs all that went on in Divergent. She explores every end of every relationship and finally discovers who she is. LOVED IT!!
