I'm still not sure that I can clearly explain why I liked this book so much. But I'll try.
It seems that the main characters are people who are truely in a desparate place in their lives, whether it is obvious to others, or to themselves, or not. Each character has been damaged by events beyond their individual control from the outset. Very good book. It didn't grab me in the same way that After Dark, but was masterful. I feel like I could have read this book in random order and still maintained coherency in the overall story (as much as could be found in any case).
