This is Klause's first novel, and it is about grief, loss, and death of loved ones. I first read this book in middle school, and just finished re-reading it after the Twilight craze left me wanting more teen vampire fiction. I wonder if Stephenie Meyer ever read this book, because the vampire named Simon holds some striking similarities to Edward; he eats animals and not humans, he is very beautiful, and he becomes obsessed with a human girl.

I read this book in the seventh grade with special permission from the school librarian, who was required to tell me it had mature content, which only made me want it more. And it never let me down. This was a great book about family, love, loneliness, and vampires. Not what I had expected to read at all. This was a short book and it was pretty good. Compared to all the other vampire books i've read this was a little less compelling. It was a bit science-fiction-y but all in all a good read.
