This is one of the best books I've ever read. The amount of research that must have gone into it is staggering, but the author never betrays difficulty or frustration, is never pedantic or impatient. Russell Shorto takes on a subject matter -- the history of the Dutch settling of Manhattan and New Amsterdam and New Netherland -- that treated by others could be deadly dry and boring. The story is fascinating, but parts of it read like a history textbook, while other parts really bring the characters to life. The main point of the book, which is the footprint left by the Dutch colony on the "personality" of New York City in particular, is well made.
