It is truly amazing, with all the vampire books I have been devouring lately, that it took me this long to read the one that kind of sets the standard for vampires.
The story is chilling in that wonderful , creepy Victorian way. More than the presence of the monster, what scares me the most is the sheer isolation of the place and time. I enjoyed my read of Dracula. We did it for discussion at Reading Group Guides and I did one of my 'chapter by chapter' summaries at Wild City . . .

I had difficulty getting through this. It just didn't hold my attention. Every time Van Helsing would start on one of his very long speeches, my mind would start to drift and I would quickly lose interest in the book. The one saving grace was Mina Harker née Murray. Bram Stoker was able to build a very strong, intelligent, and likable female character - impressive given the book was published in 1897.
