I'm afraid I did not enjoy this book. I found the history of philosophy quite tedious at times and was on the verge of giving up, however the fact Sophie kept getting the mysterious postcards was just enough to keep me reading (or skimming) through the philosophy letters. Having finally made my way through I wish I had given up and started on something else.

Good plot, bad writing. I enjoyed learning about some of the philosophy, though most of the history I already knew about since it was very basic. I really didn't like Sophie's character, who was written in a contradictory manner. One moment she would be a very intelligent girl who could discuss philosophical theories in detail with her mentor and then the next moment she would ask these really stupid questions just to move the conversation where the author wanted it to go.

A fun fantasy that consists of a book within a book containing many characters from other books. At the same time it was a textbook in the history of philosophy. Since I never have taken a philosophy class it was very instructive and interesting for me. However, if I never hear the word "bagatelle" again it will be too soon.
