This is the prequel to The Lord of the Rings. I actually read LOTR first when I was 9 years old (back when dinosaurs walked the earth...) and it was rough going, so I highly recommend reading The Hobbit first. I first read this book when I was 16 or so as required reading in my English AP class. It was my introduction into the genre and it is because of it that I found books aren't even limited to the imagination.
It is easy to fall in love with the magical world created by Tolkien.
