“Legend” is a highly complex dystopian novel. I’m reminded of why, for some years, I had stopped reading dystopian fiction (until Dan Simmons’ incredible “Flashback” published in 2011). Each time I read a dystopian story, my emotions kick in along with my fears, and I dread living in this type of society, whatever the failings of the culture in any particular such novel or novella or short story. This book was not exactly what I was expecting, but I really enjoyed it. Before I got too far into the story, I read the spot about Marie Lu and saw that the book was inspired by Les Miserables. I think that little tidbit changed my view of the book. I became skeptical on how good this book would be, but it surpassed my expectations. I look forward to the next installment.

I hate when books are stretched out when it's not necessary. It's hard not to compare young adult dystopian books and this one's not my favorite, but I found it to be better than a lot out there. ...more

I really enjoyed the dystopian world and the characters and the plot. Only issue was that I felt like the romance between Day and June escalated a bit too quickly.
