I, like everybody else around my age - women, I guess - not men - read this when young.
Can't say I didn't enjoy it this time around, but couldn't help noticing how soapy it is. I was told, however, by a member at Book Nook - who are doing it in August - that it was deliberately written that way.
The author was inspired by Pilgrim's Progress.
