I have always loved the movie this book is based on, so I was excited to read the book. Warning: the book is even more heartbreaking than the movie.
It's a beautifully written book; Ishiguro inhabits the mind of a mid-century butler completely believably. The beauty of the English countryside comes through, even though Stevens may be a bit of a stilted writer. Stevens is a bit of a jerk sometimes and refuses to be his own person, but he's a sympathetic character anyway. His struggle with learnin ...more
