I’ve long been a fan of Jackie French’s historical novels for children, and so I was intrigued when I heard she had written a book for adults. The cover was gorgeous and the blurb told me it was set during World War I, one of my favourite historical periods, and so I bought it to read on my summer holidays.

This is excellent & Sophie Higgs is an exceptional heroine. An Australian girl, sent to England in 1913 to be 'finished' in a way, & to broaden her horizons, Sophie learns how a woman may influence this world entirely run by men. As war encroaches, Sophie is empowered, understanding where she can help in this world gone mad, & perhaps even after the fighting ends.

It is also a coming of age story, & a romance, as Sophie finds love & friendship in many different forms, and a tribute to the unsung
