As usual, Jane Harper's writing was true-blue Aussie and atmospheric. I also read this book while 2019 bushfires were raging throughout Australia, so it was doubly extra atmospheric.
This was a story about family, small community, and surviving in outback wilderness. In addition to painting vivid images of how deadly Australian deserts could be, Harper also didn't shy away from using Aussie slang (more than her previous two books) which made the dialogues extra authentic. I really enjoyed this from the very first page.
Incredibly evocative writing, you get a real sense of the heat, the isolation, the 'feel' of the land.

Thematically you have an exploration of inter-generational trauma, domestic violence, toxic masculinity, sibling rivalry, and sexual assault. It is multi-faceted but handled well.
