What Members Thought

I had given this whole series a wide berth but, being in the kid lit business, I finally decided it was profesionally irreponsible to roundly avoid such a widely read text. So, I caved.
It was not as awful as I thought it would be, but Shakspeare Ms. Myer ain't. After reading I realized what was bothering me about the style: I was reading a Mary Sue. An extremely self indulgent Mary Sue.

I checked it out of the library because I saw that almost everyone in my school was holding a copy of it... and couldn't keep their noses out of it. They read it during lunch, hidden in textbooks during Chemistry, even one girl got out of class to use the "bathroom" only to whip out Twilight and finish the next chapter. So I thought, what the heck, go for it.

I was 15 going on 16 when I read this book and was blinded by the alluring, yet completely cliche, romance. Edward was the guy I wanted, Bella was the girl I wanted to be. For a little while, I was completely obsessed with this book. Now I am 17 and understand a lot more about life and writing.

If I could give this book 4.5, I would. I guess I'm seriously all into the vampire fiction now. This was a great book though, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the movie, as well as reading the other books in this series!

If you want kind of a fun, semi-mindless read, go for it. My inner 15 year old liked the story, so from that standpoint, it was awesome.
My 31 year old writer/reader self wasn't as keen on it. The first quarter of the book was really enjoyable and then the same descriptors got used repeatedly, certain vampire "rules" were broken and halfway through the book there still wasn't really much drama except for the tension between the main two characters. The REAL danger, doesn't get started until late ...more

I enjoyed this book! It was an easy read compared to most. Don't expect anything like Harry Potter but a great escape for those who want a science fiction.

Undoubtedly this would have been one of my favorites have I read it while in high school. In my thirties, I found the descriptions of cuddling against a cold hard vampire chest mildly repellent, and all the idealistic gushing and suicide tendencies somewhat tiresome. Its a quick read, an intriguing story, so I can see the huge appeal.

Can't wait for this one!
