"I see you're reading The Grasshopper Lies Heavy ," he said. "I hear it on many lips, but pressure of business prevents my own attention." Rising, he went to pick it up, carefully consulting their expressions; they seemed to acknowledge this gesture of sociality, and so he proceeded. "A mystery? Excuse my abysmal ignorance." This was a reread, inspired by the amazon series. I hate to say it, but the show is better. The view of the American Reich greatly improved the story.

But this is a good book, though a painful one. I grew up with people who talked the way that Joe did, and who saw Asians as that shopkeeper guy did. The slaves really made me uncomfortable. It took a lot of nerve to publish this, I imagine.

I found this book to be more suited to readers with a more avid love of history and World War II than I possess. It is written with precision and care, but just not quite my cup of tea.
