What Members Thought

“I guess you could call it a "failure", but I prefer the term "learning experience.”
Finally! I got the chance to read Andy Weir’s bestselling classic (now turned into a movie) “The Martian” and now I am seriously kicking myself for not reading this book sooner! Who would have thought that I would be reading a science fiction novel that is full of adventure, drama and humor?
The book starts off with a space crew going on Mars to explore the red planet when suddenly, a dust storm shows up and t ...more

4 ½ stars.
I saw the movie first and really enjoyed it--so much that I couldn’t resist buying the book when I spotted it on special and read it instead of reading other things I’ve had sitting around awhile.
The moviemakers stuck amazingly close to the contents of the book, although (of course) they left out/streamlined some sections; adapted things into more cinematic format (most of Mark’s logs in the book are text entries, but in the movie they’re vlogs); made a few things more dramatic than t ...more

I knew going into the book that it was humorous, so I wasn't expecting a suspense filled experience. But I have to say, the narrator's journal entries stretched believability. We know little about him - nothing about his past or his relationships with anyone outside of his parents and crewmates. His journal ...more

I loved this, couldn't put it down. It was funny because my Kindle kept dying while I was reading it, so every time Mark was having power problems-I kind of was too. I've read what other people are saying about this, that it's Macguyver on Mars, and I do agree. That's not a bad thing! I wasn't bothered by the lack of emotion from Mark, I got a general idea of his personality from his "log" reports and emotion probably would have bogged this story down. It does have a ton of tension, and I think
