A fascinating book! I'm glad someone gave it to me and proved my initial suspicion of what the book would be like, based on the blurb and a negative review, wrong. The made-up footnotes can be overkill, but the rest of the story makes up for that. It's sort of like Jane Austen crossed with JK Rowling. (Which, of course, means Lisa probably won't be reading it.) ;) ...more

I went out to celebrate last night because I finally finished this book. Yet another great book that took me ages to finish for no good reason other than it is huge. I really liked this book too, I know some people say it is slow (it took me forever to finish yet I wouldnt describe it as a slow read...it was fascinating and well written from start to finish) but the sheer feat of writing a book like this is impressive to me. OMG, i finally finished this book. I enjoyed it, but it took 800 pages to build up to the suspense of the last 200. I enjoyed it, the writing style was interesting and unusual and the author did a lovely job of creating setting and emotion of the places where people were. i like magical stuff.

I don't like to read footnotes referencing real sources I most certainly resent being expected to read them referencing nonexistent ones. ...more
