Red River, also known as Anatolia Story, is a tale about a girl. Yuri lived pretty normally for a Japanese girl right before the start of the 20th century. But strange things started to happen when she was near water.

In the grand Hittite Empire, who, despite it's power as great as even Egypt near its height, is often forgotten as history passes. But within this empire, as with many before and after, a queen wishes to gain power. Her son is the youngest of those in line for the throne, and the ki Red River, also known as Anatolia Story, is a tale about a girl. Yuri lived pretty normally for a Japanese girl right before the start of the 20th century. But strange things started to happen when she was near water.

But within this empire, as with many before and after, a queen wishes to gain power. Her son is the youngest of those in line for the throne, and the king is aging. This queen decides to also use her power as a priestess to summon someone whose blood can be sacrificed to place her son on the throne. With her powers over water, she drags a girl from right before the 20th century, placing her in the middle of Ancient Anatolia.

Yuri must now attempt to escape the clutches of the current queen, but to do so she gets caught up in the history of an Ancient Empire and those civilizations surrounding it. Due to her exotic appearance and knowledge of things beyond her time, as well as an unrefined and dormant charisma, this girl gets mistaken for many things, even the goddess Ishtar. Now under the servitude of another prince, how shall she fare in a forgotten, bygone place, whose most powerful woman desires her running blood?

An interesting story with a unique setting that was the first thing to grab my attention. As a history student, really anything involving Anatolia piques my interest from the sheer fact that it's such a rare backdrop for much of anything. These were powerful civilizations, and using the Hittites, a group that was truly forgotten until recent uncovering, was really what forced my inner historian to start reading up on this. (The people who sacked Babylon. The people who's power rivaled Egypt. The civilization who had iron during the height of the Bronze Age. They're in the Bible and people didn't even know of it's existence until recently!) So of course, this proves to be a setting you don't normally see. Also the character of Yuri, from what I have seen with the series thus far, has proven herself to be quite a strong character. She might start off as a damsel in distress, but later on she really evolves into something powerful, and she may have even had influence form the real life queen Puduhepa. ...more
