Love, love love this book! Really, it's chick lit at its best. Great characters, tight plots, realistic romance. If you are looking for the next great chick lit book, then this is definitely it.

I finished reading this novel a few minutes ago (it's now 6:11 PM EST) and I must say that it was a very good story, with an equal blending of humor, emotional tensions, and solid character development.
Normally, novels of this genre I don't read because contemporary novels don't interest me very much. But the author is a Goodreads friend and for that reason, I bought the book and read it.

All I can say is that the light side of this story will not disappoint fans of the Chick lit genre: it's funny and romantic. Those looking for a little more "substance" cannot possibly find fault with the way CM weaves the serious struggles of addiction into Kate's tale.
I think CM carefully explored a very sensitive topic in a humorous yet respectful way. I didn't feel preached to or patronized.

I finally picked SPIN up last week and it’s been a total time sucker. In the best possible way.
Other than sharing a nickname, I have absolutely nothing in common with Kate Sanford. In fact, I’m pretty sure Kate would hate me. I’d be a hipper version of her roommate, Joanne, the square. In fact, in real life, I might really want to hate Kate. I kept trying to hate her in the book (a few times I actually managed it) but she’s weirdly likable. Even when I sorta wanted to throttle her, I couldn’t he ...more

Kate is a 30 something freelance writer in the big city. She has always yearned to be a writer for her favorite music magazine The Wire. Low and behold, they are looking for one when she is online. After applying, sending samples, and going through the hurdles to land an interview she is shocked to learn that she's landed the interview of her dreams. It also happens to be her birthday. Instead of going out and tying one on, she tells herself to have a quiet night, because she wants to job of her

I loved this book! More intelligent than your average chick lit, SPIN takes a sensitive yet humourous look at life amongst the celebrities inside a rehab facility.
Katie Sandford, the heroine of this story is equal parts clever, goofy, and natural. I found her easy to relate to, especially her love of music. In some respects, Katie's career dreams are very similar to my own, so I was avidly reading to see how things would work out for her.

PThe Good Stuff
Author is Canadian (and the book isn't depressing or about the prairies -- you have to understand my issue here, we are forced to read depressing Cdn literature -- often about the prairies - from Grade 4 all the way through College in Ontario - it colours you )
Dialogue between characters is nice and crisp, fresh and often funny as hell
Smart and funny
Fast paced tightly written story, doesn't drag
Fabulous character development, Kate feels like a real person, warts and all

You know, you've got to love a book with a happy ending!
OK-OK, I'm not supposed to say that. It maybe gives too much away, but this book was a really nice read. I honestly wasn't sure what I was in for at the start of the book. (Picked it up and read afew pages and promptly put it down again). I was probably more like the character Joanne - the nerd who never fell off the tracks type - than the main character Katie, who never stayed on the track or anywhere remotely close to what looked like a t ...more

Poor Katie - she wants to be a writer so bad. It's just that her idea of a social life gets in her way, too much drinking and partying. When she bombs her dream job interview, she is crushed.
But wait ..... they have a deal for her - go into rehab and get the scoop on a star and maybe they will have a job for her. Okay, she can do this! But while she is there, pretending like she needs treatment, she learns a lot about herself and those around her. They are not just stars, they are people just li ...more

I bought this book in an airport after finding out my flight was delayed. I bought it solely based on the accolades and cover blurb. I'm glad I did! One of the comments said this was a "fast-paced" book and that sums it up well; I had this book finished by the next day. Catherine McKenzie created a narrator that I wasn't sure I could like, or even trust, but that is what makes this narrator so great. One of her flaws is not being honest with herself and it was enjoyable to take the journey with

What would you do to get the job of your dreams? Would it be worth telling tales about your newest friend? Kate Sandford found her self in just that situation. To be honest, so didn't expect to care about IT Girl Amber Sheppard when she met her in rehab. It was only a means to and end and she really did want that job at the hottest music magazine The Line. In Kate's mind, going into rehab was only a front, she didn't really need to be here, did she.

Stayed up late finishing SPIN. Totally fun, totally addictive. Wasn't quite sure how it was going to end, which is always a pleasure to have happen. Somewhere between Bridget Jones Diary (but a much better protagonist), a million little pieces (but much more fun) and the movie Almost Famous (but, you know, a book). Can't wait to read more from Catherine McKenzie!

I couldn't put this book down. It sucked you in and never let up! Any book that makes rehab seem like fun is a great read! All of the characters were wonderful and I cared so much about what happened to all of them. Highly, highly recommend! Can't wait to read more of her books!!
