Here we have all the ingredients for a good crime novel, they just never really come together in a satisfying manner. The main characters are potentially interesting but they don't really get that much interesting stuff to do. The plot is also very awkwardly structured and moves extremely slowly, with the author's "tell don't show" writing style not helping things that much either.

I'm going to give the obnoxious, drawn out, implausible end a pass and stick to a 5-star rating. This book was simply too compelling and devious to rate otherwise. For years, I ignored the hype surrounding it but once I finally picked it up, I literally could not put it down. A most excellent read that certainly deserves the accolades it receives.
