It's no secret that "Bladerunner" departs widely from the book it was based on, and that probably kept me from getting very far into this book back in the 1980s.
Having just finished it, though, my thoughts are more like, "Screw Bladerunner."
I loved the Deckard's argument with his wife about her scheduled six-hour self-accusatory depression. I loved the discombobulating interview with Luba Luft even more.

Not a review, but a NOTICE:
My wife and I just watched the first of 10 hour-long episodes of sci-fi based on the short stories of PKD on Channel 4 in the UK.
a review in The Guardian
I note at the end credits it was Amazon Studios, so you may find it there at some point.
It was superb. The actress, Holliday Grainger, also stars in BBC "Strike" based on J.K. Rowling's detective series.
I highly recommend both.
Cheers

There are good ideas here but they're strung about on a story with stilted dialogue and shoddy plotting. Having seen both Blade Runner movies (and loving the sequel), I'd considered many of the themes Dick raises even before I read this. The pet thing was different and a couple of scenes genuinely moved me. But the Mercerism scenes didn't work. I would've liked a more robust look at the pluses/minuses of android life as opposed to them.
