A painting hangs on the wall. Two beautiful people. The narrator stares at this painting and then recalls the story behind it.

This is a love story (as one wonderful reviewer stated.. not a romance, but a LOVE story). The Krygyzstan where Jamila lives is one ruled by males. But Jamila is able to be herself in this world.
And eventually finds the love she deserves. Yes, Jamila is in this painting hanging before the narrator. And with her is her love as they walk toward the mountains.
