I originally rated this based on my childhood impression, which was enamored of books with reformed brutish children in lonely vistas. Now, reading this novel to my own kids, it felt more like a never-ending lecture that we wanted to have done and over with. Still, the idea of a secret garden with a hidden key is achingly beautiful to my inner child .... so.... it remains 5 stars.

Isn't this so true?
I love the sense of wonder in this book, the beautiful descriptions, the sense of someone (several someones, actually) making the active choice to become better than they have been, or to reach out to one who needs them.

I'm sorry that I never had this book when I was a kid, but I'm really glad that I finally got around to reading it.
