I read this book twice in my life: once at age 14 and once at 30-something. I think the ideal age for it is the approximate age of the heroine and her sister - between 17 and 22. It's a love story about poor girls and rich boys, and it's written in diary form, as seen from the younger and more likable sister.

This is certainly a different style from The 101 Dalmatians! Much more depth and thought went into this one, and it was enjoyable, but on a very different kind of level.

It brings to life the English countryside and some of my favorite moments were tongue-in-cheek comparisons to Jane Austen and the Bronte books, but also the description of a castle but also an English way of life that was crumbling just as much as the castle.

This is a light-hearted Victorian-style romance apparently inspired by Pride & Prejudice. Seventeen year old Cassandra is living in a crumbling castle with her extremely impoverished unconventional family members. The story is told through her journals which she conveniently and predictably begins days before unforeseeable events dawn, events that will change the family fortunes and bring the journals to a tidy end.
