Even though I knew the Big Plot Twist going into this book, having seen the movie some 30 years ago, it was such a page-turner, it didn't matter. For the first half, I couldn't wait for the protagonist to discover just how wrong she'd been, and for the second, I couldn't wait to find out how the characters were going to get themselves out of that mess. I was intrigued with the voice of the narrator. She was an only child with no family. She is a paid companion of Van Hoffman's. She wishes she could bottle memories and revisit them. She has learned to live in her head and really lacks a lot of history. She is naive and tells her whole life history to Maxim before she has had the benefit to leave his. Another example of her immaturity.

I thought it was a book that you could look at the characters in different ways. If you looked at it as a Freudian book it appeared one way. Literally it seemed confusing to me. But psychologically it made a lot of sense.

What a very strange book. It is of the gothic horror type, very creepy, yet strangely engaging. The horror and expectation rises with every chapter, yet it is hard to predict the ultimate outcome, though the first two chapters hint at it. It's a strange combination of Jane Eyre, a Sherlock Homes-type "whodunit," and a twisted Jane Austen style story.
