I first read this book decades ago as a young high school student and loved it. This story of a Nigerian village being transformed by their initial encounter with British missionaries bent on colonizing the native population is told with a sympathetic bent for the male Nigerians. As a young teen, I was fascinated by the tribal traditions and heartbroken for the loss of this way of life. Beautifully written. I hope my daughter one day reads it and feels the same curiosity, sadness, and outrage that I felt reading it. Somewhat similar to Okonkwo's desire to have his sons be manly warriors such as himself, I wish for my daughter to be a inquisitive bookworm like myself.

The Struggle Between Change and Tradition

It's 3 1/2 stars.
It's undeniable that this book doesn't touch the strings that belong to our culture.
Nevertheless it's a must read, to learn and understand better a culture we don't know and that we destroyed without any second thought.
