The 30 year old protagonist of this novel appears to be living a fairly normal life in its opening pages. Then, inexplicably, his wife walks out of his life and a number of rather odd people walk in. The action meanders through dreamscapes and strange interactions. I do not enjoy magical realism; I simply do not understand it. I could not make sense of this book, its lengthy tangential subplots, its fantastical elements.

Well, it was interesting. I genuinely enjoyed reading it. The characters were interesting, Murakami creates some very suspenseful stories and scenes (including in his subplots), and the writing style was gripping and just continued moving. However, it is definitely NOT for everyone. Both of my parents would hate it, although for different reasons. Bizarre book that left a lot of loose ends, but was thoroughly enjoyable to read due to the author's masterful writing. Don't expect a clean, tidy plot or ending, but do expect a surreal and thought-provoking reading experience. ...more

Haruki Murakami es un escritor raro para lo que usualmente leo. Tiene un estilo que al momento me parece único, quizás no lo sea, pero al menos con lo que suelo leer me parece único.

Su estilo mezcla aspectos realistas, de lo que sería el diario vivir de gente común, con momentos "fantásticos" o "magico-realistas" (realismo mágico). Situaciones que son inexplicables, pero simplemente las debes tragar para disfrutar el momento (enjoy the ride, le dicen a estos tipos del ibros).
