On winter solstice, a severely injured man, presumably from a boat wreck, stumbled into the Swan, an inn renowned for storytelling, carrying a bundle. Once over the threshold, the man whom no one recognized passed out. The son of the landlady caught the bundle. After the local nurse, Rita, tended to the stranger, she visited the girl's body in the storeroom. Everyone had a sen

What a beautiful story! Fulfilling all of my “Once upon a time...” wants and needs. I went in to this book with high hopes and I was not disappointed. A genre-bending story with some historical fiction, magical realism, and mystery. I was kept on my toes and loved the way that the story ended! Would recommend:)

3.5 I liked the book, but had a hard time getting into it because I was struggling to keep the characters straight. Eventually, it started coming together and the ending was perfect. Good writing, nice story, but too long and convoluted.

This disappointment is all on me. I didn’t realize that I’d already read one of the author’s books and despised the writing style or else I wouldn’t have picked this one up. I literally trudged through it: there was nothing intriguing about the magical realism or religious undertones, and the myriad rehashing of the inn’s storytelling customers did nothing for me. I didn’t care about any of the characters and cannot remember anyone’s name or backstory. Not my thing at all. Ugh.

Two stars.

DNF at 50%.

This book, although it contained some beautiful writing at times, was extremely long-winded and meandering. I couldn't sustain interest in the plot at all, I didn't truly care about the characters, and the pages upon pages of description were mind numbing. I could definitely see this working for certain readers, but I am not one of them.
