Sharks in the Time of Saviors by Kawai Strong Washburn (#21 in 2020)

Thank you to @mcdbooks @fsgbooks for my gifted copy. PUB DATE: 3/3/2020

When Nainoa was 7 years old, he fell overboard on a family trip. As sharks began to appear in the water, everyone naturally assumed that Noa was a goner. The problem with judging a book on the cover and not reading a full synopsis (because you want to avoid spoilers), is that I thought this book would be heavily based around Sharks, which I was hoping for.

Washburn presents strong themes of cultural identity that were relatable, yet informative. There were many complex layers of this book to unravel. It kept me my brain working - processing, acknowledging, questioning, etc... - it was muy bueno.
I highly recommend delving into the Flores' family's world as they work on surviving, without losing themselves (as a whole and individually) in

Wow. That is the first word that comes to mind after finishing this book. Just wow.

In Sharks in the Time of Saviors, Kawai Strong Washburn delivers an amazingly well done story. He tackles themes that I'm sure resonate for many Hawaiian families: economic hardships, drugs, adequate schooling, private schooling, and the overall impact the white man has had on the islands. He does this while really dialing in on Hawaiian culture and so many things that ring so true to me. His references
