Man this is impossible to review. I feel like it's a book you're either going to like or not, and possibly strongly so. It's sprawling, like America itself, and big and deep and complex and intense and also simple and true-feeling and captivating. Not a lot happens in some parts and everything in the world happens in others. I found myself yelling at the recording, "NO! NOOO!" or laughing or crying in the parking lot just to listen to one last bit. It's twisty and turny and predictable and shock

This book is incredibly funny and horribly sad, totally irreverent and thoughtful and philosophical. The story follows a man named Shadow, a convict who is released from prison a few days early when his wife dies and who then is drawn into the world of the gods - all of the ones who were brought to America by the people who believed in them - from the Norse gods to the leprechauns, to the African gods, the gods of the native Americans and more. As the gods of the past prepare to fight the newer

I actually did not like this at all. It was such a chore to finish. It was so slow and there are so many like “mini stories” contained within that added absolutely nothing to the plot. And heck the plot - you are left entirely in the dark until the back maybe 20% and it is such a pain getting there. I didn’t even care.

This is a hard book to review. It's not like any book I've read before. It's hard to categorize and it meanders quite a bit. It's structured in such a way that it felt like I was on the adventure with Shadow, and like Shadow I had no idea where it all would lead. Stories and actions that seemed unrelated to the main plot are tied up so nicely by the end of the book.
I liked Shadow, although a member of my book club pointed out that he's not a typical protagonist. He just goes along ...more

Audio version from Hoopla. It was also an anniversary edition, so some additional good stuff was added. Bonus to audio, Neil Gaiman read parts!!! These were my favorite parts of the book.
Fantastic story about the old and almost forgotten gods that were brought along to America by its many immigrants and natives. I loved it, plain and simple. The main character, Shadow, was very easy to like and rather laid back about what all the gods were doing to him. I guess they got him at a really weak mom ...more

From Kali to Leprechauns to Thoth to threatening talking TV's and Odin; from Jail to Rock City; what a ride. It is very difficult to describe so I won't try very hard but it was brilliant. The scope of this book is huge and full of vanishing mostly mid-west Americana. The audiobook was full cast and wonderful too.
I hear there is a TV series, I'm sure they will screw this masterpiece up. ...more
