Loved it!

Read for the Frisco Undead and Unread book club.

So this is more or less an adult version of the Hunger Games. It is much much darker. Trigger warnings rape & violence. When I read the hunger games I loved it but I didn’t feel like it had anywhere to go. I felt in particular the 3rd book was just rough. This however has a fantastic base. Darrow has been lifted out of obscurity and thrown into a competition to rise to the top and has succeeded but that is only step one of the plan. I can’ ...more

What an interesting book. In some ways, the story is familiar. An unlikely hero takes on an impossible mission goes through an amazing preparation and then is tested in ways he could never have imagined.

The biggest test was that he realized that he wasn't all that different from the people he despised. And, he identified the capacity to become just like them. Add layers for race and class identified by color and this world starts to take shape.

So, the surface is just every superhero story ever ...more
