I snagged this book as my white elephant at the Book Club Christmas party and figured it would be a great way to kick off 2018.
The story is extremely slow. The world building though is fantastic. The story takes place in a circus setting and it is a completely immersive experience. Through out the story you have the circus described through many view points and it is a truly fascinating place. The description are highly detailed and full of fun tidbits and back stories. Mysterious and a little twisted. there's a love story in it, too.

It started out interestingly enough, but the longer it went on, the more bored I got with it. The author is very liberal with description, to put it mildly. I felt like she kept describing the same "amazing things" over and over again until they became decidedly un-amazing. Also, the magic, which the entire book is based on, was very weakly realized: some playing cards here, some scribblings and hair clippings in a book there and PRESTO MAGICKO you have an entire circus. I am very picky about ma

A great premise that suffered somewhat from a bit of over-writing and an unsatisfying end. I want to go to the circus, certainly, but the relationships between the people weren't developed or explained enough for me. I could picture the place and not the characters, which maybe was partially the point, but it didn't do it for me. Don't get me wrong, still a solid 3-3.5 star read, but not making its way into my Top 10.

I have been a really bad reading slump this month or at least for me it's a slump. I have been interested in reading The Night Circus for some time now. I thought what better for me to get of a slump than to take the plunge and listen/read to a book narrated by the amazing Jim Dale.
I am glad I went on the journey through The Night Circus because in the end I quite enjoyed it. I think The Night Circus is one of those books that allowed me to read it slow. Ever read a book that you just couldn't ...more

This is an enchanting tale of two magicians who are competing with one another within the realm of an enchanted circus. Celia and Marco have both been trained to compete in this game since they were children, although the rules are never explained to them. Within this mysterious and magical circus, the two competitors fall in love. This is a richly woven story that shows that even in a circus where everything is black and white, there is still room for a colorful imagination.

The writing is incredibly descriptive...too descriptive at times. While I enjoyed the story I do think that it suffered from poor execution. It was as if the author confused vagueness with plot development. The pacing of the story was also problematic being excruciatingly slow at times. This could be rather frustrating.
In spite of this I did enjoy the book. The first few chapters dragged a bit and the middle dragged a lot, but I was quite satisfied with how everything came together in the end. ...more
