An interesting premise and a compelling read. I knew it would end with a cliffhanger, and it ended almost exactly the way I expected it to. Normally that would be a sign of a predictable story, but that is not the case here. Instead, Flewelling gives the reader an ending that both fulfills expectations and creates new ones. I need to read a few other things before I can continue this series, but I will definitely read the rest of the trilogy.

Loved it! This book has so much to offer. The writing is simple, yet beautifully crafted, which means it's easy to get to the good parts without dozing off trying to process too-complicated language. The plot is extremely engaging. This is the first time that I can recall everyone in my fantasy book club giving a book five stars and immediately purchasing the sequel. Highly recommend! ...more

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and bought the rest in the series. It is very well written and manages a few surprises here and there.

In the beginning we follow 2 wizards as they are given a quest by the Oracle to help hide the future queen. They do so using a dark magic which has a consequences of creating a demon which haunts the future queen. This all happens within the first 100 pages or so. After than we get 420 pages of a kid growin

This is a blend of fantasy, gothic and coming of age with a bit of court intrigue. The writing pulls the reader in from the first page. The author took an overdone plot device, the hidden child King (or Queen in this case), and turned it into a truly unique and rather dark tale. Beautifully crafted.

The world building is incredible and the magic systems are fully fleshed out. The characters are three dimensional and complex. No stock villains or heroes here. So well done; I can't rave enough!
