This is much better than the first Ellis novel I read, Crooked Little Vein, as both characters and story stepped up. I am aware that this was initially serialized online, but that's OK, so was the last John Scalzi book I read.

Warren Ellis is a man of great ideas, I have followed his exploits and writing for a LONG DAMN TIME, and to this day, this man is on the bleeding edge of many topics. That being said, do I like this story? yes, tight and controlled works for his writing. However, if you have followed the man's work he isn't doing anything you haven't seen before. THAT is where the problem lies, if your subject matter is the future, show it to us, give us the reason that propels these characters.

It hurts to even entertain the idea of not loving a Warren Ellis work, but here we are. I'm usually a sucker for Warren's future-futurey stuff, but this reads like everything I always hated about William Gibson. Oh well. It's the first letdown in 20 years, so I'll give him a pass. His beard has evil and terrible powers, after all.
