DNF at 40%, politics & presidential campaign with zombies? No thanks. Not even zombies is enough to make me want to finish this one. My own fault! I should’ve read the synopsis.

Why must you shatter my heart this way?! WHY!

It starts off slow. I'd call it a political thriller with zombies. More politics than zombies but they are there. Post-apocalyptic world with zombies from a virus. Bloggers are basically celebrities now.

That nutshell doesn't do it justice though. I fell for the characters. It made me think a bit, with the way society had become and everything. And then it RIPPED MY HEART OUT.

Feed takes place in the year 2039, 25 years after the zombie outbreak that occurred in 2014. In this novel, the characters are not facing a full on apocalypse. Despite the presence of zombies, much of society is intact. There are fully-operating restaurants, blogs, and even a presidential campaign. Georgia and Shaun Mason are a brother and sister duo who run a blog and have been chosen to cover the presidential campaign of Senator Ryman. I get the feeling that I'm going to be the unpopular opinion here, because this seems like a well loved book and came highly recommended. It's been on my radar for a long time, lurking in the peripheral vision of to-read books, and I finally clamped down and read it. Almost 600 pages in all its glory. And yet I still didn't even really like it.

I will admit, the world building was brilliant. I'm sure if you asked Mira Grant some insignificant detail about the world created here she would have an I get the feeling that I'm going to be the unpopular opinion here, because this seems like a well loved book and came highly recommended. And yet I still didn't even really like it.

I will admit, the world building was brilliant. I'm sure if you asked Mira Grant some insignificant detail about the world created here she would have an answer for you, but that in itself is the problem. There is just such a dump of information, and not just once, or a few times. Every page is bogged down with references, reminders, dates. It was like reading a dusty old tome of history for a country I've never heard of. Interesting, but I have no context to apply so it goes right over my head.

Plus I thought there would be more zombies, and less political turmoil? I will be the first to admit, I know NOTHING about American politics, and this was the forefront of the book. I'm AUSTRALIAN for cripe's sake, my version of politics is standing in line chewing on a sausage sanga and getting handed pamphlets that end up covered in tomato sauce. At times this felt like an Archer novel, and I went through and read my required reading of those years ago, thank you.

Plus, and I will say in huge letters SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER the cat dies. Seriously??!!??! I get characters that are dry, nasty know-it-alls and then the cat carks it. Here I was thinking it might have a part to play since it survived the mass killing of all the other barn cats, but instead it was an emotional draw that grabbed me and spat me out.

I hinted in the last paragraph that I didn't like the characters, and that rang true for all of them. The Senator, George, Shaun, Buffy. Not once did I connect with any of them. The 'siblings' were the worst- having to deal with George's constant lectures and Shaun's devil-may-care attitude wore me down. In the end I sat with no distractions and forced myself to finish.

So yeah, not the greatest book I've read, especially since this is the first book outside cozy mystery I've read this year. The zombie were great, the disease fantastic, but the book was sending me to sleep. Plus well, my spoiler wrecked it even more for me. (How could they?!?!?) so yeah, two stars. Hopefully my next book is better! ...more
