The question that is most on my mind after reading this 'novel' is, is it really a novel? To me it's not even a full novella? When I first started reading this, having not been present at my bookclub when it was chosen, I had no idea that it was a feminist response to Jane Eyre. It was only after thinking 'what the hell is this about' after literally just not getting it, that other reviews had mentioned the link. Beautifully, vividly told. I find it interesting that Antoinette's narrative style becomes more lucid as she descends into madness - it suggests that one is sane, however tough the situation and however much one struggles with it, for as long as one recognises the disjunct between one's dreams and expectations and one's reality, and this disjunct can lead to the fractured narrative of the first part; however, once one starts telling oneself stories, fabricating a reality within which one can exi
