The only reason I picked up and started this book was because I was send a free copy from my friend as he really wanted to see what everybody thought of the book was. This book is not what I expected.

Not knowing anything about the book, and just judging from the cover and the friends I knew who had read the book I expected this to more epic fantasy like Brent Weeks or Sanderson, but was I wrong. This was in part maybe because Epic Fantasy all has to be huge door stoppers, which this one is cert

I've gotten where I have a hard time getting into the big epics, so I spent the first half of this book kinda on the fence. Not because its bad in anyway, far from it. It's well written and has some really cool stuff going on - I especially like the magic system, not over the top. But.. I don't know, Epics for me have just gotten to all sound the same, even the good ones like The Emperor's Blades.

So it probably wasn't until the last 3rd of the book before I really started getting into it. If yo

This 3 star may get dropped to 2. Actual rating is somewhere in the middle.

The pov and storyline that I actually cared about was basically non-existent.

I may come back at a later point and write a proper review.

Will I read book 2? I own it so yes, will it be as soon as I originally planed. Nooooo

The Emperor’s Blades is the tale of two brothers (and a sister, but I’ll get into that later), the sons of the Emperor of Annur. Kaden, the heir to the throne, was sent to a remote monastery to learn the teachings of the Blank God while his younger brother Valyn was sent to join the Kettral, the Empire’s elite military unit. When the Emperor is murdered from within both suddenly find themselves facing more than a little bit of trouble. While Kaden and Valyn face their own threats their sister Ad ...more

Wow. I absolutely loved this book.

The setting, the characters, the writing, the action, the plot were all top notch for me. It had some very dark scenes at times, but that's just a bonus.

The book focuses on the three children of the late Emperor. They are all young adults and have been in training for the better part of the decade. Kaden, the heir to the unhewn throne has been training in a remote monastery for purposes he can't understand. Valyn, was born without the fiery eyes of his family'

Enjoyable, already on to book #2. Interesting characters with interesting backstories and even further back, shrouded, histories. Some pretty strong action, lots of intrigue and deception and subterfuge. Sword-slinging and giant bird-riding galore, some sorcerous machinations and creations with more hinted at, and a pretty grueling SEALS-type elite forces training that was well-rendered. This is a first novel though, and actually feels like it, which is not as negative as it may sound, just an o ...more

Adare gets short shrift. If you look purely in terms of page count, Valyn gets the lion's share (and is in a role where he gets to actually do the most), Kaden is in a distant second, and Adare has only a few chapters. And in those chapters, she's shown to be recklessly impulsive with her mouth--despite being groomed for a life of government/politics/arranged marriage--plus schoolgirlish with an infatuation, plus unprepared for circumstances. It would be catastrophic for the book if not for a ce ...more

This is well-written, engaging fantasy with an Asian feel. I am giving it four out of five because it has a slow beginning, but once I got into the story, I found it quite compelling. Basically, there is this enormous empire, and when the emperor is murdered, his three children must come to grips with their new roles. One son is training to be an elite soldier; the other is a mystical, aesthetic monk, and the third is a daughter who lives and works in the heart of the empire. The world-building ...more
