I’m not sure how to feel about this book. I’m a huge Hilderbrand fan- her books signifies Summer for me. However, this one started out great but the plot just didn’t work and I found it a little annoying. Why didn’t these two just get together, I’m not sure if that was ever addressed in this. The entire book was based on a secret affair which kind of just didn’t make sense. I have favorite must read authors and Elin Hilderbrand is one.
I also have certain book biases: I’m not normally a fan of books that take place over long periods of time, I’m not a fan of most sad books, or even trying to write a romantic affair.

This book was the meeting of both worlds...a book by a favorite author that manages to cover things I just generally don’t like in other books. Would I have picked up this book if it was by someone else? Probably not. Did I have to read it because it’s an I have favorite must read authors and Elin Hilderbrand is one.

This book was the meeting of both worlds...a book by a favorite author that manages to cover things I just generally don’t like in other books. Would I have picked up this book if it was by someone else? Probably not. Did I have to read it because it’s an Elin Hilderbrand? Yes.

When Mallory is 24, her aunt dies and leaves Mallory her house in Nantucket. It’s an about blessing for Mallory. She had been living in NYC with her best friend Leland and never quite fit in.

She loves to Nantucket and shortly afterwards her brother Cooper announces his engagement. He asks Mallory if he can bring his friends out for Labor Day weekend.
That weekend changes the course of Mallory’s life, she finally meets Cooper’s former roommate Jake. They used to flirt on the phone but never met.
After a disastrous weekend, Mallory and Jake are left alone at the house and wind up together. Jake has just gotten out of a long term relationship but feels like he could really fall for Mallory. Despite Mallory’s own feelings, she puts the kibosh to the idea of them dating lost distance. Instead she suggests that they meet every year on Labor Day weekend, no matter what.

Over the next 28 years, a lot of things happen that change their lives and could keep them apart but they keep coming back together.

I really enjoyed how detailed each year was.
This really was sad at times though. I feel like Mallory and Jake could have been together all along if they’d tried hard enough. But instead their relationship is tainted by the fact that it involves cheating on other people.

You also know from the very beginning that Mallory is on her deathbed at the end of the book.

Both characters seemed like good people who loved each other despite all the flaws around their relationship. I’m sorry, I can’t just call it romantic. I warned you that I was biased against certain storylines. I even liked Jake’s wife a lot in the story too. She’s not without fault either. Anyway, you definitely feel sad for Mallory waiting for Jake, and you feel bad for Jake not thinking Mallory loves him enough to want a real relationship with him. And, of course Jake’s wife.

But I love Elin Hilderbrand’s way with words and enjoyed the story plenty despite all my book likes and dislikes :) ...more

I really wanted to like this book because Elin Hilderbrand is one of my favorite authors. I just couldn't get behind the idea of a Same Time Next Year affair especially since, in my opinion, these characters didn't need to be separated. Jake and Mallory meet when they are both single and have an instant connection. Mallory decides she doesn't want to do long distance though. What??? You meet "the guy" and you won't commute for him???? Lame reason!
