A delightful read of a German family during the end of WWII. Their city of Dresden was decimated in bombing. They trekked through the countryside with Marlene, a four year elephant, who Mutti saved from the city zoo. I absolutely positively fell in love with this book!! I have read plenty of WWII historical fiction novels, but never in the form of a children's book and never from the point of view of the German civilian.

Idk why, but I never bothered to consider that POV, for surely they support Hitler so they deserve what they get. But nay, children, nay... Those that are being dragged along while a madman takes over their country and creates chaos for all deserve our sympathy too. Like Young Elizabeth and
